Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply?
You should apply in the fall approximately one year prior to your desired admission (e.g., you should apply during Fall 2008 for the Fall 2009 entering class).

What is the deadline for applications?
The application deadline is February 1. All PharmCAS materials must be submitted by this date.

What are the required prerequisites?
Please refer to the Prerequisite Coursework webpage.

Is a supplemental application required?
Only students who are admitted will be asked to complete and submit a supplemental application.

Can I be accepted with 2 years of pre-pharmacy coursework?
We have a small number of students who are accepted 2 years after high school; however, they complete the 90 required hours during those 2 years by taking heavy course loads and going to summer school. This is not recommended, but it is acceptable if the student can keep grades high and do well on the PCAT. We also have an “early acceptance” program for students who meet our average admissions criteria: 3.4 GPA and 80th percentile on PCAT. A student can be considered for this “conditional” acceptance during their 2nd year of college with the stipulation they remain in school for another (3rd) year of college and complete the remaining coursework while maintaining their good GPA. The purpose of this “early acceptance” policy is to offer strong students a guarantee of admission the following year.

What is “early acceptance”?
Please see FAQ immediately above. In addition, students will need to have completed a minimum of 3 semesters of academic coursework, including a minimum of 2 semesters of general biology/zoology, 2 semesters of general chemistry, 1 semester of organic chemistry, and 1 semester of an additional science course (anatomy and physiology, physics, microbiology) to be considered for early acceptance.

How many classes are admitted each year?
The UT College of Pharmacy admits one class each year, enrolling in the Fall semester.

How many students are in the entering class?
We have expanded enrollment to 200 students.

Does the UT College of Pharmacy accept out-of-state students (non-Tennessee residents)?
Yes, a typical entering class will include 10-20% non-Tennesseans. Our goal is to admit 20% non-residents.

Tell me about the newly expanded UT College of Pharmacy’s campus in Knoxville.
The UT Board of Trustees approved the College’s expansion plan to increase enrollment to 200 students in Fall 2006. This plan includes the expansion of our operations in Knoxville, which will allow 75 students per class to complete their final 3 years of the Pharm.D. program there. A new 15,000 square foot facility is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2007. The building is on the campus of the UT Medical Center on Alcoa Highway. The College is also developing Clinical Education Centers in Kingsport, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Jackson to accommodate the increased clinical rotations for the expanded classes during their last 1½ years of the program.

How do you decide which students complete their didactic coursework in Memphis versus Knoxville?
A student’s campus preference is based on two factors: 1) the overall strength of the applicant, including GPA, PCAT score, recommendation letters, etc., and 2) the order of admission of the student (students accepted earliest will receive their choice of campus). Campus preference of the applicant is not a criterion for admission and will not be used in selecting candidates for admission.

You are eligible to receive your campus of choice for the following reasons:

  • You are the parent of a child under the age of 18.
  • You are the direct caregiver for a family member with a chronic illness.
  • You are enrolled in the dual degree Pharm.D./Ph.D. program on the Memphis campus.

Students who do not receive their preferred campus may request to be placed on an alternate list if a position becomes available.

Which college or university should I attend for pre-pharmacy coursework?
We recommend any accredited, strong 4-year institution for you to be most competitive. We accept courses from community colleges (junior colleges), although most community college students have not performed as well historically on the PCAT, thus reducing their chances for admission.

Do I need to complete my baccalaureate degree before applying?
Not necessarily. You may apply when you have completed the majority of your pre-pharmacy work and your GPA is competitive. However, approximately 75% of our current students have a B.S. degree. Students who have their degrees are generally more competitive.

When is the best time to take the PCAT?
We recommend taking the PCAT in the summer or fall one year prior to your desired enrollment. For admission in Fall 2008, we suggest you take the PCAT during Summer or Fall 2007. This allows sufficient time to repeat the exam if you believe you can improve your score.

Where can I find information about the PCAT?
Write, phone, or get PCAT information on the web at the following addresses:

Pearson
19500 Bulverde Road
San Antonio, TX 78259

1-800-211-8378
www.PCATweb.info

Where do I send my PCAT scores?
All PCAT scores should be submitted directly to PharmCAS. Their PCAT code is 104. Please do not send PCAT scores directly to the UT College of Pharmacy.

What is the minimum PCAT score?
UT requires a minimum PCAT composite score at the 40th percentile, with no individual subject area less than the 25th percentile. However, these scores are not competitive. The average PCAT score for the class entering in Fall 2007 was at the 80th percentile.

When can I expect to be interviewed?
Interviews begin in November and are by invitation only. We advise submitting your PharmCAS and supplemental application materials as soon as possible so that you may be interviewed early in our admissions cycle. The admissions committee screens applicants and interviews students based on academic records and PCAT scores. Any applicant who scores less than the required minimum on the PCAT may not be invited for an interview.

When can I expect a final decision on the status of my application?
The UT College of Pharmacy admissions committee operates a rolling admissions process beginning in November and completed in April.

Are international students accepted?
Foreign students are eligible to apply ONLY if they already hold a BS pharmacy degree and are applying for advanced standing for our Doctor of Pharmacy program (most students will have to complete the final 3 academic years).

Foreign students MUST also have a faculty appointment at a College of Pharmacy or affiliated institution in their home country, supported by a letter from the Dean of that College. Priority will be given for these limited positions to students associated with those institutions with which we already have an affiliation agreement.

Please refer to the UT College of Pharmacy webpage regarding foreign applicants.

Who should I contact to verify that my application file is complete?
