Expand Your RAM
Eventually, you will run out of memory/RAM. It's pretty easy to run out if you only have 8 MB or 16 MB. Some of the newer Palm OS PDAs have been coming out with 32 or 64 MB of RAM, but eventually you will fill it up also. So what is a PDA user to do? No problem, just get an expansion card, right? Well, maybe. Unfortunately, some programs won't run off the expansion card and must be kept in RAM. Also, those programs with a conduit (synchronizes with your computer or gets updates from a web site) such as a drug database or AvantGo needs to be kept in your RAM.
Methods that can be used to expand your memory/RAM include:
|
Expansion memory card | |
|
"Virtual memory" manager | |
|
ROM memory manager | |
|
File compression program |
The use of expansion cards have been discussed previously in the hardware section in the Basic Section of this module. I do not recommend file compression programs as it just takes too much time to expand and then re-contract them after use of the program. Some compression programs have also been associated with loss of data by some users.
NEXT: Using "virtual memory" managers.
