The Local Area

Soon after Kentucky became the fifteenth state in the union of states in 1792, the state legislature passed an act that led to the formation of Wayne County.  In 1800, the new county was created and the citizens accepted the challenge of making it into a proud part of the Commonwealth.  Thirteen acres were surveyed by Joshua Jones and in 1802; Monticello with its population of twenty-seven people became the county seat of Wayne.

Located in south-central Kentucky, Wayne County, with a population of 19,000 plus, lies in both the Mississippian plateau and the Eastern Kentucky coal fields. Beautiful Lake Cumberland forms much of the northern border of Wayne County, while Tennessee forms the southern border. Wayne County has a large labor supply and an expanding manufacturing economy.

Primary and secondary education is provided to Monticello and Wayne Co. by the Monticello Independent and the Wayne County School Systems. Wayne County has recently completed a new 6.3 million dollar high school. The community is serviced by four pre-schools: Monticello Preschool, Wayne County Early Childhood Learning Center, Little Mountain Academy, and the Monticello Independent School Pre-School.
