A Message from the Dean

Pharmacy is an expanding, dynamic profession offering a wealth of opportunities in familiar - and unfamiliar - settings. Many occupations offer to improve society's quality of life, but the profession of pharmacy involves the preservation of life itself. Look at some of the practice choices:

  • community pharmacy practice
  • institutional / hospital pharmacy practice
  • managed care pharmacy practice
  • corporate, community or government service
  • consulting service working with geriatric patients, home health, home infusion
  • research, sales, or management in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • academic teaching / research / practice.

No matter what the choice, a secure professional future is reasonably guaranteed with the satisfaction of personal accomplishment.

Demand for qualified pharmacists is strong in virtually all areas of practice. Public approval is solid: a recent Gallup poll indicated that pharmacy is the most respected profession in the United States. Salaries are attractive. Entry level positions for pharmacy salaries are approximately $100,000.

The University of Tennessee is dedicated to maintaining its position as a leader in pharmacy education.  We  continue to improve and nurture our programs, offering a variety of academic and clinical experiences that give our graduates a powerful edge in today's competitive health care market.

As a part of our dedication to improve and nurture our programs, we tender this Scorecard for the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. Developed in compliance with The University Scorecards Program, it is a work in progress. We will continually update the scorecard as well as add items to it as the need arises. We seek your input on the Scorecard. The Dean's Advisory Council and the Alumni Board of Directors as well as the faculty have had input related to the Scorecard. For an item to be included on the Scorecard, it must be measurable! We look forward to receiving comments and suggestions from you concerning the Scorecard.

We want the best and brightest students for the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. Most importantly, we want students who are ready to add their individual stamps of honesty, intelligence, humor, integrity, and hard work to the profession of pharmacy.

As an alumnus of the UT College of Pharmacy, I am extremely proud of our students, faculty, alumni and The University of Tennessee.

Sincerely,
Dick R. Gourley, Pharm.D.
