The College of Pharmacy is proud to offer the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, or
Pharm.D., an entry level professional doctorate similar to that of other health
sciences such as medicine and dentistry. The Pharm.D. course of instruction
covers eight semesters over four academic years; students must complete at least
two years of pre-professional curriculum in an accredited community college or
university before applying to the College of Pharmacy.
In 1990, the Council of Pharmaceutical Education accredited UT's Doctor of
Pharmacy degree program. The four-year Pharm.D. curriculum is more
patient-oriented than traditional B.S. programs. The program emphasizes clinical
instruction in the third and fourth years, giving students experience both in
traditional community and hospital practices as well as in advanced clinical
roles in internal medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, parenteral
medications, nutrition, ambulatory care and other specialty areas.
The last year of study consists of clinical clerkships primarily devoted to
patient assessment and counseling, and drug therapy monitoring. These clerkships
can be completed at a variety of sites across the state, at four Indian Health
Service sites, or as part of UT's international clerkship program.
